Mothering Sunday & Clipping Ceremony

The Anglican Parish of Auchenflower-Milton celebrated Mothering Sunday, with a traditional “Clipping Ceremony”, held at The Chapel of the Holy Spirit, St Francis Theological College.

Clipping Ceremonies had been held earlier in the Parish:

Here is an extract The Courier-Mail, dated 30 August 1948 p 4 (found by our Heritage Specialist, Historian Dr Hilda Maclean):

"Church in Clipping Ceremony:

'Clipping' of a Milton Church was an outstanding of anniversary ceremony held yesterday.

Two hundred and fifty Anglicans celebrating the 75th anniversary of Christ Church, Milton, surrounded the church, joined hands, and thus 'clipped' (Anglo-Saxon: 'embraced') the church.

By carrying out this old English Mothering Sunday ceremony, the congregation expressed its love for Mother Church.

After singing two verses of the hymn, 'We Love the Place, O God,' the congregation filed into the church, where the Rev. V. H. Whitehouse. a former rector, preached the sermon and celebrated Holy Communion."
